There are two ways of earning income that do not result in CRA classifying the worker as an employee. The expensive most
common way to earn income as a contractor, not an employee, is to incorporate your own company however that can
lead to costly annual legal and accounting fees.
Another less expensive way to ensure that Canada Revenue Agency decision-makers do not give a ruling that a worker is an
employee is when participants freely form a partnership to earn points with another person such as a friend, family
member or anyone interested in non-monetary income. CRA payroll auditors and decision-makers treat partnerships as
businesses, and the business partners as self-employed.
As an extra precaution to prevent a CRA decision-maker from ruling that a point earner is an employee, Coquitlam Point
Earners Inc. (CPEI) requires that participants pay for their own work tools either by inexpensively renting them from
CPEI for one point per work day, or by bringing their own gardening tools and supplies.
